We have been through three lessons with Lola on “Target.” In our last lesson, she was going to her target on command. To build on the last lesson we’re going to change the item we’re using for our target to a raised item.
By using this raised target it will get Lola to feel the position I want her in. She will be able to stand on the target and get a better idea of what is wanted. Since the goal is for her to stand on the target, not just touch it.
This lesson will start just like the others with Lola, where she just has to “nose touch” the target. Then we will quickly progress to one foot touching, then both feet, then lastly she will have to stand on the target. The majority of this lesson is done with no commands. I only add the command in at the end of the lesson.
The object is for Lola to “self discover” what I want, therefore making the lesson last longer in her memory, so I let her take her time.
As you can see, it didn’t take Lola long to remember her previous lessons, and for us to build on that to attain our goal for this lesson. The key is allowing her to self discover. This is commonly called “Shaping”. The more you can shape a behavior the longer it will last.
